Celebration of a Garden Legacy

It was 25th June 1966, that marked the first meeting of people interested in gardening here in our Sechelt community. A year later on November 24th 1967, the name “Sechelt Garden Club” was officially reserved by the Provincial Government for a sum of 41 cents! Actually registering the Club and having it officially declared in the BC Gazette cost a little more - $23.50! What authentic year 1967 was - not only Canada’s Centennial Year, but the first Anniversary of the Sechelt Garden Club.

Now forty years later, on 24th November, 2007, the Sechelt Garden Club is holding a celebration to honour founding members, reflect upon the club’s development , share memories of past events and recognise involvement in community projects. It was in 1977, the 10th Anniversary year, that the Club had 77 members, and organised a Junior Garden Club for children at Sechelt Elementary School.

The Sechelt Garden Club has always been a forum where members become interested and involved in learning about environmentally friendly gardening. By attending monthly meetings, participating in plant exchanges, flower shows and displays, and by going on garden tours, everyone has opportunities to share their knowledge and ideas. By partnering with other organisations like the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden Society, everyone benefits by becoming positive supporters of community garden visions and projects.

A message from an honoured life member Bobbi Kelly, is “Get involved and you are a winner in learning all about gardening. By volunteering, you give back to yourself, the Club and the Community.”

Indeed Gardening becomes a legacy for us to celebrate …
